Answer: George H. Pendleton. In 1864, the Cincinnati native received 21 Electoral College votes as the Democratic nominee for vice president on George B. McClellan’s ticket. Incumbent President Abraham Lincoln and his running mate, Andrew Johnson, won the election.
Ulysses S. Grant later became the first Ohio-born presidential candidate to receive Electoral College votes in 1868.
