Uranium Plant Expansion to Create 1,300 Jobs

Nuclear fuel company Centrus Energy will invest $1.58 billion to expand operations at its uranium enrichment facility in Pike County.

The project will create about 1,000 construction jobs and 300 new operations roles, while retaining 127 existing positions.

The facility, the American Centrifuge Plant in Piketon, is the nation’s only producer of high-assay low-enriched uranium, or HALEU, used in advanced reactors. Federal officials say most HALEU supply currently comes from Russia.

U.S. Sen. Jon Husted said the expansion continues America’s leading role in nuclear development, while Centrus CEO Amir Vexler added that “the time has come to restore America’s ability to enrich uranium at scale.”

Smucker Donates Building Plus $1M to Food Bank

The J.M. Smucker Co., based in Orrville, will donate a 19,000-square-foot building, 30 acres of land, and $1 million over five years to the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank.

The food bank called the gift its most significant donation to date. The $1 million commitment will support the organization’s planned expansion into Wayne County.

The donated building is currently occupied by the Smucker Retail Store, which will close in January. The food bank plans to take possession of the building in March.

The food bank supports more than 630 pantries, distribution sites, and programs in eight counties.

Baseball Teams Battle for Playoff Spots

Cleveland took two of three from Detroit this week to move into a tie with the Tigers atop the AL Central heading into the final weekend of the regular season. See playoff scenarios here.

Meanwhile, Cincinnati won Thursday to stay one game behind the New York Mets and one game ahead of Arizona in the NL wild-card race.

Cleveland hosts Texas for three games to close the regular season.

Cincinnati visits Milwaukee. The Reds are 3-7 against the Brewers this season.
