Article Icon 1Ohio Bracing for SNAP Expiration

Gov. Mike DeWine said the lapse in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding could affect Ohio as soon as next week if the federal government shutdown continues.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said that SNAP payments won’t be issued on Nov. 1, while Ohio’s Republican U.S. Sens. Bernie Moreno and Jon Husted have signed on as co-sponsors of the Keep SNAP Funded Act of 2025.

As of May, 1.45 million Ohioans received SNAP benefits each month, representing one in nine households. Nearly two-thirds of Ohio SNAP households include children, and nearly half include older or disabled people.

Food banks across Ohio have begun preparing for increased demand in November, historically the busiest month of the year. See a list of food banks here.

Article Icon 1Superintendent of the Year Named

Beavercreek City Schools Superintendent Paul Otten was named the 2026 Ohio Superintendent of the Year by the American Association of School Administrators and the Buckeye Association of School Administrators.

The award recognized Otten’s leadership, innovation, and commitment to student success. He has been Beavercreek’s superintendent since 2016.

During his tenure, Otten has established the district’s Air Force Junior ROTC program and implemented cybersecurity and information technology programs.

Otten will be considered for national superintendent of the year, which will be awarded in February 2026.

Article Icon 1New Gun Legislation Proposed

Proposed Ohio legislation would let adults ages 18 to 20 buy handguns, challenging a federal law that has barred licensed dealers from selling to anyone under 21 for more than 50 years.

Supporters of Senate Bill 303, including the Buckeye Firearms Association, argue that federal law deprives young adults of their constitutional rights, even though 18 year olds can vote and enlist in the armed forces.

Of the 29 states with permitless carry laws, 14 allow those 18 and older to carry concealed handguns without a permit. Ohio requires people to be 21 to carry a concealed handgun, but allows open carry starting at age 18

Although licensed dealers cannot sell handguns to people under 21, federal law allows 18-20 year olds to possess them.
