Ohio Senators Vote to End Shutdown

Ohio Republican U.S. Sens. Jon Husted and Bernie Moreno voted for a bipartisan deal to end the partial federal government shutdown.

Lawmakers continued working toward full approval.

The agreement would fund the government through Jan. 30, provide back pay for federal employees, and fund food stamps.

On Monday, the shutdown entered its 41st day, the longest in U.S. history. House Speaker Mike Johnson instructed members to return to Washington in preparation for a vote.

Veterans Day Celebrated Statewide

As Veterans Day events take place statewide today, the Ohio Statehouse began its Flags of Honor series with an exhibit honoring Lancaster Vietnam War veteran Edward I. Arthur.

Full Metal Jacket actor Matthew Modine will serve as the keynote speaker for a ceremony at the National Veterans Memorial and Museum in Columbus. More central Ohio events can be found here.

In Cleveland, Gulf War Air Force veteran Tim Hauser will serve as the grand marshal for the city’s Veterans Day parade, which begins at City Hall at 12:30 p.m. today. See northeast Ohio events here.

Several Cincinnati-area parades and ceremonies are also scheduled, and the Cincinnati Zoo will offer free admission to veterans.

Bishops to Discuss Ohio Merger

U.S. Catholic bishops are expected to discuss a possible merger between the Steubenville and Columbus dioceses during closed-door meetings this week, according to The Pillar.

The talks are set for an executive session of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ fall plenary assembly, which begins today.

Steubenville is among the nation’s smallest Catholic dioceses, while ranking high in seminarians per capita, Catholic wedding frequency, and adult conversions.

Earlier this year, Bishop Edward Lohse, the Steubenville diocese’s apostolic administrator, said that a merger remained a possibility—even after an internal report found the diocese to be viable—because of a continuing decline in Appalachian Ohio’s population.
