Storm Grounds Hundreds of Flights

Hundreds of flights were canceled across the state after Winter Storm Fern dumped record snowfall in cities including Dayton and Columbus.

More than 219 arriving and departing flights were canceled Sunday at John Glenn International Airport in Columbus, and at least 30 more were canceled on Monday.

Dozens of flights were canceled Sunday at Dayton International Airport, stranding some passengers as the airport set a 24-hour snowfall record.

Farther south, more than 160 flights were canceled at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.

Ohio Talent Helps Power Team USA

More than a half-dozen hometown Ohioans are set to compete for Team USA at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milano Cortina, Italy.

Four will compete in freestyle skiing: Connor Curran and Quinn Dehlinger of Cincinnati; Kyra Dossa of Cleveland; and Derek Krueger of Chagrin Falls.

In hockey, East Palestine native J.T. Miller will skate for the men’s team, while Laila Edwards of Cleveland Heights and Gwyneth Philips of Athens will compete for the women’s team.

Among other athletes with Ohio ties, Cleveland native Red Gerard, who now lives in Colorado, will compete for the U.S. in snowboarding.

Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski made the U.S. men’s hockey roster and goaltender Elvis Merzlikins headlines Latvia’s team, while 12 current and former Ohio State women’s hockey players will represent various countries.

Drivers Using Phones Less

Ohio drivers use their phones less behind the wheel than the national average, a Cambridge Mobile Telematics study found.

Ohio drivers averaged 21.9 phone taps per 100 miles, compared with the U.S. average of 23.6.

Their phone call rate was 5% lower than the national average. Ohio banned holding or using a phone while driving in 2023.

Within the state, drivers in Harrison, Meigs, and Hocking counties spent the least time on the phone while driving. Those in Adams, Highland, and Brown counties spent the most time.

The study analyzed 189 million trips from safe-driving programs, using phone data to flag hard braking, speeding, and distracted driving.
