Court Rules on Mistaken Traffic Stops

Police officers are not required to immediately release a driver pulled over by mistake, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled.

The ruling stems from a 2018 case in which a man alleged Linndale police conducted an illegal search that led to felony drug charges. Police said they pulled over Quentin Fips because they believed one of his headlights was out, though Fips showed both headlights were working.

After running his Social Security number and discovering an arrest warrant, police arrested Fips and searched his vehicle, where they found crack cocaine. Fips argued in court that the traffic stop should’ve ended once police learned they had pulled him over by mistake.

The Eighth District Court of Appeals sided with Fips, but the Ohio Supreme Court ruled that officers lawfully continued the stop by running his Social Security number to confirm that a licensed driver was operating the vehicle.

$65M Settlement Earmarked for Ohio Counties

Gov. Mike DeWine announced that $65 million from a 2023 environmental restoration settlement with DuPont will be distributed to six Ohio counties.

While serving as Ohio’s attorney general in 2018, DeWine sued DuPont for allegedly releasing perfluorooctanoic acid (PFAS) into the air and the Ohio River from its facility in Parkersburg, West Virginia.

Belmont, Gallia, Lawrence, Meigs, Morgan, and Washington counties will receive settlement funds for drinking water infrastructure projects, including building new water sources, connecting existing infrastructure, and removing PFAS from public water systems.
