Alternative College Admissions Test Weighed

The state Senate is considering House-passed legislation that would add the Classic Learning Test to the college admissions exams offered at Ohio high schools.

House Bill 326 would allow high school students to take the CLT in place of the ACT and SAT. More than 300 universities accept the CLT.

The CLT is similar to the ACT and SAT while also presenting reading questions on classic literature, ranging from Christian saints to Plato and Aristotle.

The proposal passed the state House with support from all Republicans and three Democrats.

Judges Cleared to Make Political Endorsements

Ohio judges may now make political endorsements after the state Supreme Court cleared a Clinton County judge of wrongdoing for endorsing his son for a judgeship.

In 2023, Judge John William Rudduck publicly endorsed his son, Brett, for a seat on the Clinton County Municipal Court. A disciplinary counsel argued that the endorsement undermined the judiciary’s impartiality and violated three judicial conduct rules.

The state Supreme Court ruled that penalizing Rudduck would violate the First Amendment. Chief Justice Sharon Kennedy noted the state’s interest in “maintaining judicial independence, integrity, and impartiality,” but said that the current rules go too far in restricting political speech.

Wahlberg Developing Pete Rose Movie

Actor and producer Mark Wahlberg said he’s developing a movie about Cincinnati Reds legend Pete Rose, focusing on the latter part of Rose’s career as a player and manager.

Wahlberg, speaking on an episode of the Throwbacks podcast, said a script for the biopic is already written. He didn’t say whether he plans to act in the film or who would play Rose.

Rose, who was banned from baseball for betting on games while managing the Reds, died in 2024 at 83.

Last spring, Rose’s ban from Major League Baseball ended, making baseball’s all-time hits leader eligible for Hall of Fame consideration.
