Article Icon 1Cheryl’s Cookies Founder Dies at 74

Cheryl Krueger, the Ohio entrepreneur who turned Cheryl’s Cookies from a single Westerville shop into a multimillion-dollar gourmet-cookie brand, died Saturday at 74 after a three-year battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Krueger and college roommate Carol Walker opened the first store in 1981, selling cookies and other treats based on family recipes. She later expanded the business into Cheryl & Co. and sold the company in 2005 for $40 million.

After her 2023 diagnosis, Krueger spoke publicly about her illness to raise money for Parkinson’s research. She also served on the boards of Bob Evans, Heartland Bank, The Ohio State University, The James Cancer Hospital, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, and the Columbus Chamber of Commerce.

In a statement, her family said, “Cheryl measured success not by awards received, but by lives impacted.”

A federal grand jury in Cleveland this week indicted three Guatemalan nationals living in the U.S. illegally, accusing them of smuggling unaccompanied children into the country and defrauding the federal program responsible for their care.

Prosecutors said siblings Maritza Cahuec Coc and Carlos Cahuec Coc filed fraudulent sponsorship applications using forged birth certificates and consular IDs, posing as relatives to gain custody of minors from 2020 to 2023.

The charges were brought under Operation Take Back America, a Justice Department initiative targeting cartel-linked smuggling networks that officials say has produced more than 400 convictions nationwide.

Most Ohioans caring for aging parents and other adults are under financial strain and reporting stress levels close to burnout, according to a new AARP Ohio study.

The report found 93% of caregivers have spent their own money on care, and 7 in 10 have faced at least one financial hardship, such as taking on debt or skipping savings. AARP says 1 in 4 Ohio adults is now a caregiver, or roughly 2.2 million people.

The findings come as state lawmakers weigh Medicaid reforms aimed at controlling home health care spending amid a crackdown on fraud.
