Article Icon 1Heat Dome Returns across Ohio This Week

Ohio’s brief break from summer heat is ending, with highs climbing into the mid-90s by midweek.

High pressure brought sunny skies and lower humidity to Columbus on Monday, with highs near 90. Heat and humidity return by Tuesday, pushing highs into the mid-90s with a heat index near 100 by midweek.

Northeast Ohio starts the week in the upper 80s under a heat advisory. Highs climb into the low 90s Tuesday and Wednesday, with overnight lows stuck near 70 offering little relief.

Article Icon 1State Approves $1M for Rescued Kids

Ohio’s Controlling Board voted Monday to approve $1 million in emergency aid for 16 children rescued from a Vinton County home.

The Ohio Department of Children and Youth requested the funding for foster care and medical costs, calling the case “an unprecedented child welfare crisis.” Investigators say some of the 16 children, ages 18 months to 18 years, were found near death.

Four adults—Gary Siders Sr., Gary Siders Jr., Christina Siders, and Elizabeth Siders—each face 16 counts of felony child endangerment.

Vinton County is Ohio’s least populous county, and lawmakers say its social services are especially limited for a case of this scale, as the Siders children more than doubled the number of children in temporary custody.

Article Icon 1 Big Boy Train Draws Crowds

Thousands gathered to watch the Big Boy 4014 locomotive made its historic stop in Struthers Sunday, part of its return trip across the country. The Big Boy was the largest, heaviest, and most powerful operating steam locomotive in the world.

The 133-foot-long locomotive is the only Big Boy to still travel the tracks and is one of just a handful of remaining Big Boy engines that were built to haul heavy equipment during World War II.

You can feel it vibrating in your body. I mean, it’s a massive machine, and people talk about that and people want to see it for themselves, and here they are downtown Struthers to get a look at it for themselves,” the train’s engineer Ed Dickens said.

The train made the trip in honor of America’s 250th celebration. After a stop in Rocky River on Monday, the 4014 continues west toward its final stop in Cheyenne, Wyoming, on July 29.
