DeWine Mobilizes Guard after Storms

Gov. Mike DeWine declared a state of emergency in Perry and Muskingum counties and activated the Ohio National Guard after Tuesday’s severe storms unleashed destructive winds, widespread flooding, major power outages, and at least one death across Ohio.

Roseville was nearly cut off by floodwater, with just one road remaining passable, as crews also carried out rescues there and in Crooksville. DeWine ultimately deployed 40 Guard members from transportation companies in North Canton and Coshocton to assist with high-water rescues.

In central Ohio, winds reached 82 mph at John Glenn Columbus International Airport. Franklin County’s tornado sirens didn’t sound because the National Weather Service never issued a tornado warning for the county, however, NWS crews were expected to survey the area for evidence of twisters yesterday and today.

By late Wednesday evening, AEP Ohio reported more than 34,000 customers still without power. The utility said some restoration work could continue through Friday.

NORAD Intercepts Plane over Geneva

F-16 fighter jets intercepted a civilian plane over Geneva on Tuesday after it entered restricted airspace while President Trump attended the Patriot Games youth athletic tournament at Spire Academy.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said flares were deployed around 6:15 p.m. to get the pilot’s attention before the aircraft was safely escorted out of the restricted area.

Trump was in Ohio for the final day of the three-day Patriot Games, a youth competition tied to America’s 250th anniversary.

Earlier this week, NORAD was forced to intercept multiple civilian aircraft near Trump’s golf club in New Jersey while the president was on-site.
