Lake Erie Swimming Remains Dangerous

Dangerous swimming conditions are expected along Lake Erie through tonight from Cedar Point east to the Pennsylvania state line, prompting the National Weather Service to warn swimmers to stay out of the water.

A Beach Hazards Statement covers Erie, Lorain, Cuyahoga, Lake, and Ashtabula counties, where waves of 3 to 7 feet are expected along with a high risk of rip currents. Rip currents can quickly carry swimmers away from shore.

The weather service is urging visitors to follow posted signs and closures and avoid piers, breakwalls, and river outlets. Waterspouts are also possible through today amid isolated thunderstorms.

Court Upholds Out-of-State Wind Farms

The Ohio Supreme Court upheld state approval in a ruling allowing six wind farms in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Iowa to qualify as renewable-energy resources eligible to sell power in Ohio.

Carbon Solutions Group challenged certifications issued by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, arguing that Avangrid didn’t meet the criteria to be certified in the Buckeye State.

The majority found that PUCO’s staff testimony and analysis supported the certifications and rejected the challenge. Justice Patrick Fischer dissented in part, arguing that PUCO had violated record-keeping requirements and that the evidence was insufficient to uphold the commission’s decision.

Gauff, Fils Win Cincinnati Titles

Coco Gauff captured her second Cincinnati Open title Sunday with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over fellow American Jessica Pegula, while France’s Arthur Fils defeated American Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 to claim his first Masters 1000 championship.

The women’s final was Cincinnati’s first all-American title match since 1970. Gauff raced to a 5-0 lead in the opening set, then held off Pegula’s second-set rally to secure her second Rookwood Cup and 12th career WTA title.

Fils, 22, seized control in the deciding set to become the youngest French Masters 1000 champion and the first Frenchman to win at that level since Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 2014.

The victory will lift Fils to a career-high No. 11 in the ATP rankings, while both champions now turn their attention to the U.S. Open in New York.
