Olentangy Schools Top Report Card

Olentangy Local Schools earned five stars in Ohio’s newest school report card, standing alone as the only district of more than 10,000 students to earn the state’s top mark.

Only 61 out of more than 600 districts statewide earned a five-star rating. After Olentangy, which has over 23,000 students, Mason City Schools in Warren County was the next-largest five-star district with 9,700 students.

English language arts proficiency climbed to a five-year high of 62.2%, and math reached 56.4%. Officials credited the first full year of classroom instruction grounded in the Science of Reading.

Chronic absenteeism fell for a fourth straight year to 23.9%.

Ohio Has a New Richest Family

Denise York and her family have passed Les Wexner as Ohio’s wealthiest, ending a run of at least five years in which the New Albany retailer held the top spot.

York, a Youngstown resident whose family owns more than 90% of the San Francisco 49ers, ranked No. 158 nationally at $10 billion.

Wexner, who built Victoria’s Secret and Bath & Body Works, followed at No. 170 with $9.3 billion.

Two Cincinnati fortunes round out the state’s four: Cincinnati Bengals owner Mike Brown placed No. 224 with his family at $7.6 billion, and Medpace founder August Troendleat No. 396 at roughly $4.4 billion.

Almanac Maps Ohio’s First Snowfall

A Farmers’ Almanac map projects that the season’s first measurable snowfall will arrive in northern Ohio in November and southern Ohio between late November and December.

Measurable snowfall generally means at least one-tenth of an inch on the ground. The almanac distinguishes it from the season’s first airborne flakes and its first inch of accumulation—milestones that can occur weeks apart.

In northern Ohio, cold air moving across the comparatively warm waters of Lake Erie can produce lake-effect snow after reaching the shoreline.

The almanac cautions that snow isn’t guaranteed during these windows and describes the projections as general guidance rather than precise forecasts.
