Article Icon 1Toledo Lifts Chemical Leak Evacuation

Residents near a north Toledo chemical terminal were cleared to return home Friday, ending an evacuation that began when a storage tank started leaking glycidyl methacrylate late Tuesday night.

Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz said an employee error during a transfer set off a chemical reaction in the tank, and the company has “accepted responsibility.”

The tank finally stopped leaking Thursday night, 47 hours after the release began. Fifty-seven people were treated at area hospitals.

Hazmat crews found no detectable hazards on re-entry and turned the site over to the company and the U.S. EPA for cleanup.

Article Icon 1Jury Convicts Driver Who Killed Deputy

A Hamilton County jury on Friday found Rodney Hinton Jr. guilty of murder for deliberately driving into and killing retired sheriff’s deputy Larry Henderson, rejecting his plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.

Henderson was directing traffic near a University of Cincinnati graduation in May 2025 when Hinton struck him, hours after watching body camera video of a Cincinnati police officer fatally shooting his armed son—which was determined to be justified.

Prosecutors argued Hinton knew right from wrong despite his mental illness, and jurors convicted him of murder, reckless homicide, and felonious assault.

Hinton faces a mandatory 15 years to life in prison, and his attorney plans to appeal.
