Article Icon 1Gas Prices Rise Despite Tax Suspension

Ohio’s average gas price jumped 36 cents in a week to $4.40 a gallon on Monday, climbing above where it stood when the state’s gas tax suspension took effect.

Gov. Mike DeWine signed House Bill 519 on Oct. 1, cutting the 38.5-cent gas tax and 47-cent diesel tax to a fraction of a penny for 90 days starting Oct. 4. The break will cost the state about $725 million.

Drivers in Columbus are paying an average of $4.43, while Cleveland and Akron sit at $4.42. Sunday’s prices across Ohio ran from $3.42 to $5.69 a gallon.

GasBuddy’s Patrick De Haan blamed a refinery problem in the Great Lakes region and said Ohio prices should drop noticeably this week as it clears.

A DeWine spokeswoman said the suspension was never a price freeze. Rep. Munira Abdullahi, D-Columbus, who voted against it, called the holiday a political stunt.

Pike County health officials confirmed 20 new measles cases Friday, pushing the county’s total to 22 just over two weeks after its first case.

The Pike County General Health District in Waverly is also tracking two suspected cases. It says contact tracing is complete, with exposed residents notified and given guidance.

Infected people can spread the virus from four days before a rash appears until four days after. The district is asking anyone with measles to stay isolated through that fourth day.

The district calls vaccination the best protection, noting that two doses of the MMR vaccine are about 97% effective.

Article Icon 1Lakefront Plan Swaps Stadium for Park

New drawings for Cleveland’s downtown lakefront put a park shaped like a football field where the Browns now play at Huntington Bank Field.

The North Coast Waterfront Development Corporation planned to send the 50-acre framework to City Hall Monday, opening public review. It locks in streets and public spaces but leaves the mix of housing, offices, and retail up to the market.

Renderings show a splash pad, a quarter-mile pedestrian corridor, and continuous public access along Lake Erie. The Browns plan to leave for a new stadium in Brook Park in 2029, and the old stadium is set for demolition.

The nonprofit and master developer DiGeronimo Development hope to start building permanent public spaces in late 2027. Executive Director Scott Skinner called it “a 20-year development and construction project.”
