Fifty-one people and eight dogs were rescued from the storm-swollen and fast-moving Cuyahoga River on Sunday in Kent, according to the local fire department.

Rescue crews initially responded to a call involving six children and five adults who fell out of rafts, and then they saw more people losing control and falling into the river from rafts and kayaks.

Multiple agencies, including Portage County Water Rescue and several local fire departments, assisted in bringing everyone safely to shore.

Signs are posted warning of hazardous conditions. Kent fire officials urged visitors to avoid the water.

East Ohio Regional Hospital was acquired by 360 Healthcare Inc., with plans to reopen in the fall. The hospital closed in late March and laid off more than 400 healthcare professionals.

360 Healthcare President Harold Ramsey said he hopes many former employees return to the hospital.

Hiring for other healthcare providers and staff has started, with a job fair being planned. The hospital’s physician group is expected to open offices ahead of the full reopening.

The new owner’s top priorities include restoring power, deep cleaning the hospital, and coordinating with Martins Ferry and Belmont County officials.

Article Icon 1Two Republicans Enter Congressional Race

Republicans Derek Merrin and Wayne Kinsel launched campaigns for Ohio’s 9th Congressional District seat, which includes Toledo.

Merrin, a former state representative, lost to Democratic incumbent U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur in 2024 by fewer than 3,000 votes.

Kinsel, a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel and owner of Voodoo Brewery Toledo, is making his first run for public office.

Kaptur has yet to announce whether she will seek re-election. She is the longest-serving woman in the U.S. House of Representatives, elected for the first time in 1983.
