Article Icon 1Ohio Lawmakers Approve Budget

The state Senate and House have passed a compromise version of the state budget, which now heads to Gov. Mike DeWine. The Senate passed it 23-10, while the House voted 59-39 in favor.

The budget features a flat 2.75% income tax rate for residents earning more than $26,000 and includes $600 million for a new Cleveland Browns stadium.

Lawmakers agreed to use a portion of the state’s $3.7 billion in unclaimed funds—such as unclaimed settlements and overpaid utility bills—for the Brook Park stadium. Opponents have threatened to challenge the plan in court.

Gov. DeWine retains line-item veto power, enabling him to strike specific items from the budget.

Article Icon 1School Choice Program Ruled Unconstitutional

A Franklin County judge has ruled Ohio’s 20-year-old EdChoice school voucher program unconstitutional. EdChoice provides tuition vouchers for families to send their children to private schools.

Roughly 200 public school districts filed suit in 2022, arguing the program increases segregation and creates an unequal education system.

Supporters, including Parma mother Kathy Miller, say EdChoice gives parents options when local public schools do not meet their children’s needs.

The ruling is expected to be appealed to the Ohio 10th District Court of Appeals and possibly to the Ohio Supreme Court.

Article Icon 1Ohio State Honors Hayes at ROTC Building

Ohio State University leaders—including Archie Griffin and Athletics Director Ross Bjork—held a dedication ceremony at the ROTC building this week to honor legendary football coach Woody Hayes.

A portrait and a quote from Hayes were unveiled during the ceremony: “The height of human desire is what wins, whether it be on the Normandy Beach or in Ohio Stadium.”

Before coaching at Ohio State, Hayes served as a U.S. Navy lieutenant commander in World War II, commanding PC-1251 during the Palau Islands campaign and later the USS Rinehart.

Hayes coached at Denison, Miami (Ohio), and Ohio State. In Columbus, he won five national championships, 13 Big Ten titles, and coached two players to three Heisman Trophies.

Dear readers,

We started The Ohio Flyover because we know that many Buckeyes prefer unbiased, fact-based reporting instead of the biased “journalism” forced on consumers by most broadcast, cable, and print legacy media outlets.

Readership has tripled since our March launch, helping us build one of the largest news publications in Ohio. We cover the headlines calmly and fairly, and without any cost to you.

I hope you enjoy The Ohio Flyover as much as we enjoy bringing it to you every morning. If you like what we do and you value our work, we’d like to ask for your support in continuing to grow.

Would you consider making a donation to support our work?  For some $15 or $30 is a sacrificial gift. Others can chip in $50 or even $100 to support fair, unbiased journalism.

I know some of you are on fixed incomes and can’t easily contribute, but any amount will help us continue to thrive and succeed. If you can, please chip in below.
