Article Icon 1DeWine Signs Budget; Issues Record Vetoes

Gov. Mike DeWine signed Ohio’s $60 billion state budget late Monday that creates a 2.75% flat income tax and provides funding for a new Cleveland Browns stadium.

The new tax rate applies to residents earning more than $26,050 annually. Ohioans making less than that amount will continue to not pay any state income tax.

DeWine issued 67 line-item vetoes, the most of his tenure.

Notable vetoes included restrictions on LGBTQ-related library books, expansion of private school vouchers, and limits on the state’s clean water program.

Article Icon 1107-Worker Marion Plant to Close

Tennessee-based International Paper will close its Marion plant on Sept. 1, resulting in the loss of 107 jobs.

The paper and packaging company operates more than 200 facilities worldwide and employs about 31,000 people in the U.S.

International Paper also announced the closure of its Wichita, Kansas, plant and the sale of a mill in Xalapa, Mexico.

Vermilion hosts the Woollybear Festival in October, where the color of a caterpillar is used to predict winter weather. It’s considered the largest one-day festival in Ohio.

Other featured towns include Lisbon for the Johnny Appleseed Festival, Greenville for the Annie Oakley Festival, and McArthur for a Sasquatch event.
