Article Icon 1SCOTUS to Hear Ohio-Led Case

The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to take up a First Amendment challenge to campaign finance laws, originally filed by Vice President JD Vance and former Ohio Rep. Steve Chabot.

The appeal challenges limits on coordinated campaign spending between candidates and political parties. The Supreme Court will consider the case during its next term, which begins in October.

In a 2024 ruling, the Cincinnati-based U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the limits on coordinated campaign spending, citing established precedent.

Vance was a U.S. Senate candidate in Ohio when the appeal was filed, and two national Republican committees have since taken over as lead plaintiffs.

Gov. Mike DeWine announced on Friday that Ohio’s “Next Generation 911” system has been successfully implemented in 10 counties and will expand to 15 additional counties soon.

Unlike the current 911 system, which uses cell tower triangulation for approximate locations, NG911 uses geolocation technology to provide dispatchers with a precise caller location for emergency response.

NG911 has already been fully implemented in Athens, Carroll, Champaign, Columbiana, Harrison, Monroe, Morgan, Union, Van Wert, and Washington counties.

The next phase will add Allen, Belmont, Fairfield, Guernsey, Hardin, Hocking, Jackson, Jefferson, Marion, Muskingum, Noble, Perry, Pickaway, Ross, and Vinton counties to the system.

Massie was first treated in Portsmouth, Ohio, before being transferred to Columbus for further care.
