A Cuyahoga County grand jury declined to indict three Cleveland Heights officers in the August 2024 shooting death of 18-year-old Christian Tyson Thomas.

The Ohio Attorney General’s office released its report finding that officers faced a credible threat and were justified in their actions.

Cleveland Heights Mayor Kahlil Seren called the grand jury’s decision a “positive thing,” while adding, “Our entire community has suffered this loss.”

Officers responding to a disturbance between Thomas and his father said they heard a gunshot inside the home and saw Thomas exit with a firearm before they opened fire.

Article Icon 1Eagles, Bobcats, and Bears … Oh My!

Bald eagles, bobcats, and black bears are experiencing significant population growth in Ohio, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife.

Officials recently counted 964 bald eagle nests across 87 Ohio counties, up from four nests in 1979.

Bobcat sightings have increased from just six in 2001 to 777 statewide in 2024. The state’s only native wild cats were locally extinct at one time due to deforestation and hunting.

Black bears share a similar story, having gone locally extinct by the 1850s. Last year, there were 210 confirmed black bear sightings.
