Article Icon 1ODOT Studying Proposal for New Interstate

The Ohio Department of Transportation is conducting a $1.5 million study exploring the construction of a new interstate highway that would run through Toledo, Columbus, and Chesapeake.

As part of a larger proposal for the creation of an Interstate 73, most of the proposed Ohio highway would follow U.S. Route 23. I-73 would stretch from northern Michigan to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, incorporating sections of I-75 and I-74.

Last month, U.S. Rep. Dave Taylor, R-Amelia, introduced a resolution backing I-73. He also discussed the project with U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.

The study comes as Gov. Mike DeWine has pushed upgrades to U.S. 23, including removing traffic lights and adding interchanges and overpasses to improve safety and traffic flow.

The Farmers’ Almanac has released its long-range winter forecast, predicting that much of Ohio will experience a “classic winter wonderland” with colder temperatures and frequent snowstorms throughout the 2025-26 season.

Forecasters expect a “very cold, snowy” winter across the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley regions, branding the upcoming season with the phrase “chill, snow, repeat.” The full forecast is available here.

The Almanac also projects that significant cold snaps will hit much of the country in mid-January and mid-February.

Snowfall in Ohio has trended lower over the past decade.
