Article Icon 1Gambling Blamed for Youth Sports Violence

Cincinnati city councilmember Scotty Johnson said illegal gambling on youth football games—sometimes involving thousands of dollars per game—is fueling violence at local sporting events.

Johnson, a former police officer, said the scale of betting led Cincinnati police to stop patrolling youth football games.

His comments came during a joint meeting of Cincinnati Public Schools and the city’s Healthy Neighborhoods Committee. Several officials said they were unaware of the gambling activity.

Last fall, the school district was forced to change kickoff times for several high school football games due to “community violence.” The next month, shots were fired at a peewee football game.

A federal judge permanently blocked Ohio’s law requiring parental consent for minors under 16 to access social media, ruling it unconstitutional and “troublingly vague.” The law had been set to take effect in January 2024.

U.S. District Court Judge Algenon Marbley ruled the Social Media Parental Notification Act violated First Amendment rights.

NetChoice filed the lawsuit, arguing the law infringed on users’ rights and imposed unjustified burdens on companies. NetChoice is a trade association representing platforms like Meta, TikTok, and Snapchat.

Earlier this month, Meta announced expanded parental controls for teen accounts on Facebook and Messenger. The company also plans new Instagram safeguards requiring parental approval for certain features.

A ranking by Money, Inc. listed Upper Arlington as the wealthiest neighborhood in Ohio, citing the area’s median household income of about $123,000, rich architecture, and proximity to major academic and economic hubs.

The Columbus suburb edged out nearby Dublin and New Albany, which took second and third place, respectively. Other central Ohio enclaves on the list are Powell, Bexley, Granville, Marble Cliff, and Worthington.

In southwest Ohio, Indian Hill, Madeira, Springboro, and Wyoming made the list. In the Cleveland area, Shaker Heights, Beachwood, Pepper Pike, and Chagrin Falls were among the communities recognized.

The 30 Ohio areas on the list were selected for strong property values, excellent school districts, and low crime rates. You can see the full list here.
