Four Ohio State players were selected in the first 11 picks of this year’s NFL draft, led by wide receiver Carnell Tate, who went fourth overall to the Tennessee Titans.

Edge rusher Arvell Reese was taken one pick later by the New York Giants, while linebacker Sonny Styles went No. 7 to the Washington Commanders, and safety Caleb Downs was selected at No. 11 by the Dallas Cowboys.

Strongsville native Blake Miller, out of Clemson, was drafted No. 17 overall by Detroit.

The Cleveland Browns traded the No. 6 pick to Kansas City and moved back to No. 9, where they selected Utah offensive tackle Spencer Fano. Cleveland picked again at No. 24, taking Texas A&M wide receiver KC Concepcion.

The Cincinnati Bengals didn’t make a first-round selection after trading the No. 10 overall pick to the Giants for defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence.

Article Icon 1Cincinnati Fires Police Chief

The city of Cincinnati has fired Police Chief Teresa Theetge about a month after a report found she hadn’t been an “effective leader.”

Theetge was placed on leave in October after Cincinnati faced a summer of criticism over downtown violence, including a July brawl that Vice President JD Vance described as “a mob of lawless thugs beating up an innocent person.”

The report released in March said Theetge didn’t address a “strong culture of retaliation” within the police department and described her leadership style as “rigid and authoritarian.”

Theetge’s attorney called the city’s decision to fire the chief “shameful,” while Fraternal Order of Police President Ken Kober called it “unjust.”

For now, Interim Chief Adam Hennie will remain at the helm of the police department.

Article Icon 1Court Reins in Submetering Companies

The Ohio Supreme Court unanimously ruled that submetering companies are public utilities that must be regulated as such, reversing a previous policy by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO).

Submetering companies buy electricity at discounted commercial rates and then contract with landlords to sell power to renters, a model critics have likened to price gouging.

The Supreme Court sided with American Electric Power Ohio, which sued over PUCO’s decision to hand control of central Ohio apartment complexes to a middleman company, Nationwide Energy Partners. That company, and others like it, must now work with state regulators.
