Mushrooms Sicken 13 Ohioans

Thirteen northeast Ohio residents became ill after eating wild mushrooms in recent days—including one who required a liver transplant—following persistent wet weather that fueled mushroom growth across the region.

Eight patients ate mushrooms from the same batch, and five were transferred to Cleveland Clinic. Doctors warn that poisoning symptoms can mimic a stomach virus and may temporarily ease before severe liver or kidney injuries develop.

Summit County Public Health issued a wild mushroom warning, urging residents not to eat mushrooms growing in yards or elsewhere.

Officials also recommend keeping children and pets away and seeking immediate medical attention after any suspected ingestion.

Storms Cancel Historic Ravioli Dinner

Sacred Heart Church in Cincinnati’s Camp Washington neighborhood canceled its Oct. 11 ravioli dinner after a prolonged power outage spoiled food and supplies that had been prepared for the 115-year-old tradition.

Storms knocked out power to the storage building for four or five days, ruining about 15,000 ravioli, 70 gallons of sauce, and 500 meatballs.

The long-running fundraiser supports the parish, and volunteers had been preparing to bring back sit-down service for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The committee said refunds will be issued and promised the dinner will return for Palm Sunday in 2027.

Teacher Wins Ohio’s Top Honor

Reynoldsburg second-grade teacher Taya Kidd was named 2027 Ohio Teacher of the Year on Thursday after State Superintendent of Public Instruction Philip H. Wagner surprised her during an assembly at French Run Elementary.

Kidd has taught at French Run since 2019. She serves on the school’s Building Leadership Team and Professional Development Committee, and coaches the Pickerington North High School girls junior varsity basketball team.

Kidd, who is pursuing a graduate degree in multicultural education at The Ohio State University, will serve as an ambassador for Ohio teachers and public education. She’ll also have the opportunity to represent Ohio in the 2027 National Teacher of the Year selection process.
