SCOTUS Rules on Haitian TPS

The Supreme Court cleared the way for President Trump’s administration to end deportation protections for hundreds of thousands of Haitian and Syrian migrants, a decision expected to affect thousands of Haitians in central Ohio.

About 15,000 Haitians live in Springfield, while another 30,000 live elsewhere in central Ohio.

In a 6-3 decision, the justices found that federal law largely shields the end of temporary protected status (TPS) from court review and that challengers were unlikely to prove the policy was driven by bias.

TPS is a federal designation that allows people from countries affected by war or natural disasters to temporarily live and work in the U.S. The Department of Homeland Security stated earlier this year that TPS was “never intended to be a de facto amnesty program.”

DeWine Vetoes Absentee Voter ID Bill

Gov. Mike DeWine vetoed a Republican-backed election security measure that would have required a photo ID to cast an absentee ballot, blocking an effort to extend Ohio’s existing voter ID law to mail-in voting.

House Bill 472 would have applied identification requirements to ballots cast by mail, not just those cast in person. In a statement, DeWine said Ohio’s elections are already secure and that the legislation would’ve placed too much of a burden on absentee voters.

Senate President Rob McColley criticized DeWine’s decision, calling HB 472 a “common sense election security bill.”

DeWine issued the veto the same day he rejected a second bill that would’ve exempted some electric submetering companies from being classified as public utilities.

Athletes Sue Over NCAA Eligibility Rule

An Ohio judge denied an emergency request from college athletes seeking to block a new NCAA eligibility rule, leaving the rule in place for now and scheduling a hearing for next week.

The 15 men’s and women’s basketball players, all 2022 high school graduates, say the age-based eligibility model unfairly shuts them out of a fifth season while allowing athletes from other classes to keep playing.

Under the new rules, the NCAA will allow athletes five seasons of competition within a five-year period, beginning with their full-time enrollment or the academic year after their 19th birthday. Athletes whose four-year eligibility expired this past year under the prior rules won’t be allowed a fifth year.

The NCAA says it is aware of the challenge and does not intend to reverse course.
