Lawmakers Form Data Center Committee

Two state lawmakers have launched a bipartisan committee to examine residents’ concerns about the growing presence of data centers across Ohio.

State Sen. Brian Chavez, R-Marietta, described the committee as a “fact-finding effort,” while his co-chair, state Rep. Adam Holmes, R-Nashport, said it will work with experts, government officials, and residents to “build more informed opinions on data center development.”

Meanwhile, supporters of a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban large data center construction in the state are nearing a July 1 deadline to submit the required signatures for the November ballot.

On Tuesday, Jackson Township trustees in Franklin County voted unanimously to impose a one-year moratorium on data centers while they study the potential impact of the facilities.

Senate Seeks to Shield Thin Blue Line

The state Senate passed legislation to protect Ohioans’ right to fly the Thin Blue Line flag, also known as the Blue Lives Matter flag—a black-and-white American flag with one blue stripe that signals support for law enforcement officers.

Senate Bill 202 would add the flag to Ohio’s list of protected flags—which already includes those of U.S. military services and POW/MIA—barring homeowners associations, landlords, condominium associations, and mobile home parks from prohibiting it.

The Senate passed the bill during National Police Week, which honors law enforcement officers, including those killed in the line of duty.

Events are being held across Ohio, including a parade this morning in Cleveland featuring local, state, and federal officers, along with surviving family members of fallen officers. A memorial service is scheduled for the Greater Cleveland Peace Officers Memorial site.

State Project Maps Revolutionary War Graves

An Ohio History Connection project to document the final resting places of thousands of Revolutionary War veterans in Ohio ends this month, but residents still have time to help honor the nation’s earliest veterans ahead of America’s 250th anniversary.

The project aims to create a publicly accessible database of an estimated 7,000 Revolutionary War veterans’ graves in Ohio. More than 4,000 have been identified so far, according to an interactive online dashboard.

Ohioans can download the Survey123 app on their cellphones, visit a cemetery where a veteran is buried, photograph the grave marker, record inscriptions, and log GPS coordinates. The project deadline is May 25.
