A Franklin County judge temporarily blocked a state law that would replace some teacher-elected representatives on the State Teachers Retirement System with political appointments. The measure will remain paused until a hearing for a preliminary injunction.

Currently, the 11-member board has seven teacher representatives and four political appointees. The new law would shift that balance to eight political appointees and three teacher-elected members.

STRS manages retirement benefits for more than 150,000 teachers across Ohio.

Article Icon 1ACLU Sues Ohio State

The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio filed a First and 14th Amendment lawsuit against The Ohio State University, alleging a former student’s rights were violated when he was expelled earlier this year for political comments.

The student, Guy Christensen, posted pro-Palestinian videos to social media, including one in which he recanted his earlier condemnation of the shooting of two Israeli Embassy staffers in Washington, D.C., calling them ‘war criminals.”

Christensen also drew attention from U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres, D-N.Y., after saying Torres would end up in a Nuremberg trial if “still alive.” Torres called on U.S. Capitol Police to investigate the comments.

Ohio State declined to comment on the ACLU’s lawsuit, but reaffirmed its commitment to free speech. Earlier this month, the university received an F grade for free speech from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression.
