Guardians Capture Division Title

The Cleveland Guardians clinched the American League Central for the third straight season Saturday, routing the Kansas City Royals 11-5 before a Chicago White Sox loss to the Colorado Rockies sealed it.

The title earns Cleveland the AL’s No. 2 seed and a bye straight to the Division Series, which opens Oct. 3 at Progressive Field. The Guardians will face the White Sox or the Houston Astros.

Cleveland’s final weekend capped a comeback from a midseason slump, when the club fell to one game over .500 in July while José Ramírez recovered from hand surgery.

The Guardians have now won the Central in seven of the last 11 seasons.

Feds Sue Hospital for Religious Discrimination

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is suing Mercy Health Youngstown, accusing the health system of firing a Jewish orthopedic surgeon over his religion and race shortly after the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas terrorist attack on Israel.

The surgeon, who had practiced with Mercy in Lorain County since 2015, exceeded the hospital’s productivity goals, according to the suit. He allegedly endured years of antisemitic remarks, and after the attack, coworkers blamed “the Jews” for the 2023 attack.

Mercy then allegedly shut him out of scheduling meetings, cut his surgery time, and fired him on Nov. 1, 2023, for a reason “other than work performance.”

“Antisemitism has no place in the American workplace,” EEOC Chair Andrea Lucas said.

Video Captures Coach’s Tirade

Newly released video shows former Canal Winchester head football coach Rob Page berating a player for 34 minutes at a Sept. 19 practice as the student stood on a box while teammates worked out around him.

According to a district report, Page called the player a “loser,” told him he could end up “poor or a criminal,” and blocked his path when he tried to leave after the player showed up late to practice.

Page resigned last week from his coaching and teaching jobs before the district finished its investigation, which substantiated all four findings against him.

School officials had reportedly been previously warned about Page’s behavior both on the field and in the classroom.
