A ransomware group’s attack on Instructure’s Canvas learning platform hit Ohio campuses hard during finals week, cutting off student access to grades, assignments, and course materials.

The criminal group ShinyHunters claimed credit for the breach, which began in late April and disrupted classrooms nationwide.

By mid-week, some affected schools had reached out to the hackers directly to prevent stolen student data from being publicly released. The platform came back online, but some campuses remained under an ongoing threat as the investigation continued.

Ohio’s public university system enrolls hundreds of thousands of students, making the state one of the most exposed when the widely-used platform went dark.

Gov. Mike DeWine’s Violent Crime Reduction Initiative hit both Cleveland and Cincinnati simultaneously on Wednesday night, producing 10 felony arrests and removing eight illegal firearms from circulation.

The joint operations united the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Ohio Investigative Unit, and local police departments across both cities in a coordinated surge that DeWine has been deploying periodically across Ohio’s major metros.

Among the recovered guns was one found in the possession of a 13-year-old. In Cincinnati, a suspect named Orlando McSwain fled a routine traffic stop on foot before being subdued and taken into custody. He later admitted to illegally carrying a firearm.

“By removing illegal firearms from the hands of violent criminals, law enforcement isn’t just reacting to crime; they are preventing future tragedies,” DeWine said.

A surge in reported Bigfoot sightings in northeast Ohio is already being dubbed the “Ohio Flap of 2026”.

Six high-credibility reports in the region have been accompanied by alleged track impressions and recordings of unexplained howling from wooded areas along the Mahoning River.

Witnesses have described 8-to-9-foot figures in Portage County and surrounding townships. Ohio already ranks among the highest states per capita for Bigfoot sightings, and researchers say the latest cluster echoes a similar “flap” from 1978 that followed a harsh winter.

A retired Army sergeant who claims a personal encounter during a military exercise has re-emerged to tell his story amid the renewed interest.

The Flyover

This year’s National Memorial Day Parade, hosted by Honorary Grand Marshal Gary Sinise, is set to be the largest in its history. It stands as a powerful tribute to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our freedoms.

What makes this event even more meaningful is how it is funded. The American Veterans Center receives no federal funding for the parade. It is made possible entirely by private citizens who believe in honoring those who served.

Your support helps bring this national moment of remembrance to life while also funding year-round efforts to preserve veterans’ stories, educate future generations, and produce documentaries that highlight the true cost of freedom.

If honoring our veterans matters to you, this is a meaningful way to take part.
