A large fire broke out after an explosion at fertilizer company Nutrien Ag Solutions in Pickaway County early Wednesday morning, prompting a hazardous materials response.

The fire began about 4 a.m. in a chemical storage building. No injuries were reported, and the fire was contained to the company’s property at Five Points Pike in Mt. Sterling. The cause of the explosion remained under investigation.

Air quality remained within safe limits, and the state Environmental Protection Agency continued to monitor water runoff.

Residents were asked to stay indoors until the smoke cleared following reports that some people in the area experienced slight respiratory-related discomfort.
