Ohio Lawmakers Respond to Shutdown

The federal government shut down on Wednesday after Congress failed to pass a funding bill, prompting Ohio lawmakers to issue statements largely blaming the opposing party.

Republican U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno criticized Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for “rejecting spending levels he’s voted for in the past,” while Democratic U.S. Rep. Joyce Beatty cited federal health care credits as a reason she voted against a continuing resolution.

As a result, most national parks will be closed to the public, including Ohio’s Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Although there are numerous access points to the park’s 33,000 acres, the Department of the Interior has asked the public to avoid visiting during the shutdown for safety reasons.

The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton will also temporarily close because of a “lack of government appropriations,” as will the National Aviation Hall of Fame.

Cincinnati Children’s Earns National Recognition

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital was ranked No. 5 nationally and No. 1 in Ohio on Forbes’ list of America’s Best Employers for Healthcare Professionals.

Forbes surveyed 17,000 workers at U.S. hospital systems about wages, working conditions, schedules, safety, and other categories. More than 19,600 employees work for Cincinnati Children’s, which sees 1.7 million patients each year.

Seven other Ohio hospital systems ranked in the top 100: Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals in Cleveland, Akron Children’s Hospital, Southwest General Health Center in Middleburg Heights, Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, and Avita Health System in Galion.

Reds Eliminated in NLWC

The Cincinnati Reds were eliminated from the 2025 MLB postseason with an 8-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers that completed a two-game sweep in the National League wild-card series.

The Reds jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead but went 3-of-10 with runners in scoring position, leaving the bases loaded twice.

It was Cincinnati’s first postseason appearance since the expanded 2020 COVID-19 playoffs, and its first full-season appearance since 2013.
