Floods Trigger Emergency in 19 Counties

Gov. Mike DeWine declared a state of emergency in 19 counties after severe flooding swamped southern and central Ohio, submerging roads and damaging bridges and driveways.

DeWine signed the order after meeting with local officials, first responders, and residents in hard-hit Vinton County. It directs state agencies to lend equipment, supplies, and personnel to cleanup efforts in counties stretching from Athens and Meigs in the southeast to Montgomery, Preble, and Van Wert in the west.

Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain said 60 people had to be evacuated as water left people stranded, and some roads were completely submerged.

In Dayton, rushing water was caught on video shattering a basement window and pouring into a home during Sunday night’s storms.

Granville’s Buxton Inn Reopens

The Buxton Inn in Granville, one of the oldest operating inns and taverns in Ohio, reopened Wednesday nearly four years after a devastating 2022 fire.

Gov. Mike DeWine was set to attend what was billed as the inn’s “Grand Reawakening.” The celebration was capped at 200 guests at $200 a ticket, with money going to the Granville Historical Society.

The event featured tours of the original inn, its courtyard, and four neighboring historic buildings.

New owner Kevin Showe, whose family once renovated the historic Worthington Inn, led an extensive restoration of the 214-year-old landmark. Crews tackled a crumbling slate roof and rebuilt the basin around the property’s largest fountain.

Two-Acre Island Hits the Market

A two-acre private island on Indian Lake is for sale for $1.125 million, and it comes with an onshore lot to launch from.

Red Oak Island offers about 1,700 feet of waterfront and already has electric service through a utility pole.

The mainland lot on Newland Drive in Lakeview includes a seawall, boat dockage, a capped city sewer connection, and room for vehicles, boat trailers, and water toys.
