Article Icon 1Bill Targets Public Workers’ Prediction Trades

Proposed state legislation would prohibit public officials and government employees from participating in prediction markets such as Polymarket and Kalshi.

State Rep. Sean Brennan, D-Parma, said House Bill 887 aims to ensure that “public officials and state employees are acting solely in the public interest.”

In April, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution introduced by U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, that bans senators from participating in prediction markets.

Last week, the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission backed Kalshi as the company fights Ohio’s claim that it’s operating an unlicensed sports gambling business.

Article Icon 1Few Sign Data Center Petitions

Backers of a statewide ballot question that would ban the construction of large data centers remain hundreds of thousands of signatures short ahead of a July 1 deadline.

Ohio Residents for Responsible Development reports gathering 25,000 signatures in five weeks. The group needs 413,487 valid signatures across at least 44 of the state’s counties.

Petition organizer Austin Baurichter said he’s proud of the group’s progress, describing it as a movement that “didn’t even exist 75 days ago.”

Gov. Mike DeWine and others who oppose the ballot question say state lawmakers are in the best position to regulate data centers.
