Another Round of Winter Coming

Winter weather is set to return to the Buckeye State today, as rain turns to snow and colder air moves into the region.

Northeast Ohio is expected to see the biggest accumulation, with up to 3 inches blanketing the area from this afternoon into Thursday morning.

More snow showers are expected statewide by Saturday and again on Sunday.

From Sunday into next week, Ohioans could see wind chills below zero.

State Lobbies for Coast Guard Training Site

Gov. Mike DeWine urged federal officials to choose Ohio for the U.S. Coast Guard’s next training center, making the state’s case in a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

DeWine suggested the former Urbana University campus as the site. The campus closed in 2020 and already has dorms, a cafeteria, and a swimming pool.

DeWine cited Ohio’s military infrastructure and its support for service members and their families as reasons the federal government should choose the Buckeye State.

The governor also pointed to the Coast Guard’s Great Lakes headquarters in Cleveland, which is home to 6,000 active-duty, reserve, civilian, and auxiliary members.

Scenic Railroad to Convert Trains to Electric

The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad is partnering with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to reduce the environmental impact of two locomotives.

CVSR will convert two trains powered by 1959 Alco FPA4 diesel engines to electric power to cut emissions, as part of a $3.5 million modernization project.

The railroad said the trains log more than 1,500 hours a year, consuming 12,800 gallons of diesel, and producing more than 700 tons of carbon dioxide.

Funding comes from a settlement between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Volkswagen over Clean Air Act violations.
