Article Icon 11,300-Worker EV Battery Plant Pauses Production 

The Ultium Cells facility in Warren announced temporary and indefinite layoffs affecting 1,334 employees, citing “slower than expected” adoption of electric vehicles.

The layoffs will be temporary for 850 employees and indefinite for the rest. Affected roles include battery assembly operators, quality operators, and material operators.

The plant—about 16 miles northwest of Youngstown—is owned by General Motors and LG Energy Solution.

GM recently paused operations at its Tennessee battery plant and at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Center.

The Wood County Economic Development Commission said the county cannot legally impose a moratorium on data centers, citing zoning rules and limits on county oversight.

Meanwhile, in Lordstown on Monday night, the village council unanimously approved a 180-day moratorium on artificial intelligence data centers in that community.

The focus on moratoriums comes amid growing statewide debate over data centers, including their potential effects on the environment, the power grid, and water supplies.
