About six in 10 students in Ohio are proficient in reading, and fewer are proficient in math, according to the state Department of Education’s newly released 2024-25 report cards.

Chronic absenteeism declined, and workforce readiness improved.

Statewide, reading proficiency slipped by half a percentage point to 60.4%, while math scores rose slightly to 55.3%. About 61% met the state’s postsecondary readiness measures.

Article Icon 1Talks Ongoing in Water Quality Case

Campbell Soup Supply agreed to a stipulation in a lawsuit that its canning plant in Napoleon discharged wastewater into the Maumee River in violation of the Clean Water Act between 2018 and 2024.

At the same time, the company maintains that the plant was permitted to release certain waste products and that the plant “has had minimal, if any, adverse effects on the Maumee River or Lake Erie,” a spokesman said.

The developments come amid settlement talks in a March 2024 lawsuit filed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and environmental groups, which allege phosphorus discharges contributed to harmful algal blooms on Lake Erie. Campbell says the discharges were allowed and did not harm water quality.
