Article Icon 1Lawmakers Push to End Education Department

Republican state lawmakers are preparing a resolution urging Congress to dissolve the U.S. Department of Education.

State Rep. David Thomas, R-Jefferson, said the resolution will be introduced as part of a national push to press the federal government to act.

In November, the Trump administration unveiled a plan to dismantle the department and shift its responsibilities to other agencies.

Ohio’s proposed resolution states education “is not a power delegated to the federal government” and that academic achievement has “stagnated or declined” under federal leadership.

Ohio’s hunters, fishermen, and other taxpayers deserve credit for the bald eagle’s comeback in the state, according to Jamey Emmert, avian education coordinator for the Ohio Division of Wildlife.

Emmert said most funding for the species’ recovery comes from hunting and fishing taxes, along with taxpayer-funded conservation programs.

During tax season, Ohioans can donate a portion of their tax refunds to state programs that support wildlife, nature preserves, and scenic rivers, including the Wildlife Diversity Fund that aids bald eagles.

More than 700 bald eagles were spotted statewide during a recent count. The 2025 nest census found 964 active nests in the Buckeye State, up from four in the 1970s.

A couple has turned an old five-story windmill in Lorain into an eclectic short-term rental while preserving the landmark’s history.

Paul and Ashley Brandich bought the property in 2021 and have since converted the 75-year-old windmill into a space that includes two bedrooms and 2.5 baths.

Featuring a beach theme that capitalizes on the windmill’s proximity to Lake Erie, the property is available to book on Airbnb. You can see the listing here.

The original windmill was constructed by Joseph Ule, an Austrian-born bricklayer who started the project in the 1940s and finished it in December 1950.
