Article Icon 1Supreme Court Weighs Trump TPS Reversal

The U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments this week on the legality of President Trump’s revocation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian and Syrian migrants, a decision that could carry significant implications for Ohio.

Conservative justices appeared receptive to the argument that courts shouldn’t second-guess the executive branch’s determinations on when TPS should expire, while liberal justices questioned whether the Trump administration followed required steps before revoking the protections.

The court previously sided with the Trump administration’s move to end TPS for Venezuelans.

An estimated 15,000 Haitians live in Springfield, Ohio. U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, said in January that those migrants should’ve left voluntarily before the initial Feb. 3 deadline for TPS to end.

Article Icon 1Ohio Court Rules on Energy Cases

The Ohio Supreme Court unanimously ruled that American Electric Power (AEP) doesn’t have to refund $74.5 million to customers over the operation of two coal-fired power plants.

The court sided with AEP and state regulators, finding the utility acted properly in continuing to operate the Kyger Creek plant in southern Ohio and the Clifty Creek plant in Indiana, even as the plants lost money.

In a separate case, the Ohio Supreme Court rejected a lawsuit from a fracking waste disposal company that sought millions from Ohio after officials suspended injection operations in 2014 following two earthquakes near an aging dam in Trumbull County.

The justices determined the state acted reasonably in the interest of public safety when it shut down American Waste Management Services’ operations.

Article Icon 1Gas Prices Approach $5

Gas prices climbed to nearly $5 a gallon across Ohio amid the ongoing war with Iran and unexpected outages at Midwest refineries.

A power interruption forced BP’s Whiting refinery offline this week, reducing gasoline supplies across much of the Great Lakes region, while a refinery in St. Louis also experienced outages, according to GasBuddy.

Phillips 66 and Marathon Petroleum refineries in Illinois were already offline for planned maintenance.

Patrick De Haan, GasBuddy’s head of petroleum analysis, said prices could hit their highest level since 2022.
