Lawsuits Challenge Abortion Law

A lawsuit filed in Butler County claims that abortion rights advocates improperly amended the state constitution through a single ballot measure.

The plaintiffs argue the 2023 measure guaranteeing abortion access changed multiple provisions of the state constitution, requiring a constitutional convention instead of a ballot question. Abortion rights advocates maintain that the proper procedure was followed and dismiss some opponents as “sore losers.”

Another lawsuit, filed by a Trumbull County judge, argues that the law restricts a judge’s ability to grant or deny abortion requests from minors. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost has asked the state Supreme Court to dismiss the lawsuit, contending the judge lacks standing to sue.

Documentary Examines Deadly Crash

A new Netflix documentary titled The Crash examines the July 2022 fatal car crash in Strongsville that killed Dominic Russo, 20, and Davion Flanagan, 19.

Mackenzie Shirilla, then 17, was convicted of murdering Russo and Flanagan after driving her car into a brick building at 100 mph. Prosecutors argued she intentionally caused the crash after her relationship with Russo deteriorated.

Shirilla was interviewed in prison for the documentary, insisting she is “not a monster” and that she was a “driver of a tragedy, but I’m not a murderer.”

Prosecutors used onboard vehicle data to show that Shirilla accelerated to full throttle and never braked before impact. You can learn more about the documentary on Netflix’s website.

Disc Golf Courses Among World’s Best

Two of Ohio’s disc golf courses rank among the best in the world, according to UDisc, a platform that helps players find and navigate disc golf courses.

Echo Valley at Hoffmann Reserve in Waynesville placed No. 42 in the world. Caesar Ford Park: Championship in Xenia ranked No. 89.

Those parks, along with Eagle Ridge in Coshocton and Punderson Disc Golf Course in Newbury, also cracked the nationwide top 100.

In UDisc’s Ohio rankings, those parks were joined in the statewide top 10 by Findley State Park in Wellington, Reazin Family DGC in Miamisburg, Mt. Airy in Cincinnati, Lobdell Reserve in Alexandria, The Grassman in Ravenna, and Deis Hill Park in Dover.
