This weekend, a statewide project will unveil a first-of-its-kind map identifying the gravesites of thousands of Revolutionary War veterans buried across Ohio.

An estimated 7,000 Revolutionary War veterans were buried in Ohio after the war, and volunteers have verified about 4,500 graves. The effort, launched on Memorial Day last year, drew about 570 volunteers who photographed and logged markers cemetery by cemetery.

The completed database covers 87 of Ohio’s 88 counties and includes a live online map that allows users to search by county and view photos and records. The only county not yet included is Van Wert County, which itself is named for a Revolutionary War veteran.

The project’s manager says the men did more than fight for independence—they helped build Ohio, including by founding towns such as Chillicothe. Organizers expect hundreds of additional graves remain undocumented and hope the public continues adding to the record.

The StoryMap will be unveiled at 2 p.m. today on the America 250-Ohio website.

Article Icon 1Museum Founder Recalls Freedom Train

As America marks its 250th year, a central Ohio museum founder is recalling the summer he helped carry some of the nation’s most sacred documents from town to town.

Warren Motts served as the official photographer for the American Freedom Train, a 26-car rolling museum that toured the 48 contiguous states for the 1976 Bicentennial. He spent nearly two years documenting its journey and once held George Washington’s personal copy of the Constitution in his bare hands.

More than 7 million people lined up to walk through the train’s cars, which carried more than 500 artifacts from American history. Motts says the tour accomplished something he’d like to see again: it helped unify the country around its shared inheritance.

Motts later founded the Motts Military Museum in Groveport, where he still guides visitors through stories of service and sacrifice.
