I-270 Blitz Yields Hundreds of Citations

A weeklong, multiagency enforcement blitz on Interstate 270 yielded 961 speeding citations, including 19 for motorists traveling faster than 100 mph, as officers targeted reckless driving around Columbus.

From July 19-25, state and local agencies also issued 121 distracted-driving citations and 84 seat-belt citations, while making two impaired-driving arrests.

Records show that 786 crashes occurred on I-270 from Jan. 1 through July 9, with 144 attributed to unsafe speed. Franklin County recorded 531 fatal crashes from 2021 through 2025, more than any other Ohio county.

Lake Erie Truck Ferry Advances

The Port of Cleveland and Milo Harbour Inc. signed an agreement to develop a Lake Erie truck ferry linking northeast Ohio and southern Ontario, with service targeted for 2028.

The proposed ferry could carry up to 300 truckloads a day between Cleveland and Wheatley, Ontario. The 55-mile crossing would take two to three hours, bypassing a roughly 210-mile drive through congested border crossings.

The Port of Cleveland said that freight arriving in Cleveland could connect directly to interstate highways, rail networks, and the port’s container service to Europe.

Miami Graduate Launches Voter App

Miami University graduate Caleb Adelman has launched a free app to help voters research candidates, elections, and legislation using source material rather than social media summaries.

Adelman said the idea came after he struggled as a first-time voter in 2024 to find information he trusted enough to form his own views.

The PILLARS app allows users to enter an address and view their complete ballot, elected officials, upcoming elections, and contests down to the school board level. It also summarizes legislation and links to original sources.

Adelman describes the platform as nonpartisan and focused on tracking elected officials instead of promoting an agenda. The app is available on iOS and Android devices.
