Article Icon 1Ohio Votes on Key Races, Voter ID

Ohioans head to the polls from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. today to choose a governor and U.S. senator after a closing campaign push featuring President Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and former President Obama.

Republican Vivek Ramaswamy faces Democrat Dr. Amy Acton for the open governor’s seat, while U.S. Sen. Jon Husted, R-Ohio, takes on former Sen. Sherrod Brown, a Democrat, in a special election. Nearly 1.7 million Ohioans have already cast ballots early or by mail.

Voters will also decide Issue 3, which would add voter ID requirements for in-person and absentee ballots to the state constitution so that lawmakers couldn’t repeal them through ordinary legislation. Both major-party gubernatorial candidates back the measure.

To ensure compliance with federal voting laws, the Justice Department is sending 1,000 monitors nationwide, including to Franklin, Cuyahoga, and Medina counties.

You can find more election information on the Ohio secretary of state’s website.

Article Icon 1Columbus Sues over Medicaid Frailty Rule

Columbus is suing the Trump administration over a Medicaid rule that doctors’ groups say threatens coverage for at least 140,000 medically frail Ohioans.

Starting Jan. 1, a 2025 federal law requires many Medicaid expansion enrollees to work, volunteer, or attend school. It exempts the “medically frail,” but a federal rule adds that their condition must also significantly impair their ability to comply.

Columbus argues in its Sept. 18 lawsuit that the extra test goes beyond what Congress wrote and would push more uninsured residents onto city health services. The American Medical Association and eight other doctors’ groups backed the suit last week.

A federal judge in Boston blocked the same provision Oct. 29, but only for the 25 states and D.C. that sued. Ohio wasn’t among them.

Ohio has recorded 296 measles cases across 24 counties this year, more than six times the 45 cases it logged in all of 2025.

The state added 36 cases last week, up from eight the week before. Pike County in southern Ohio reported 20 of them.

Akron Children’s Hospital also flagged a possible exposure at its main building on Oct. 20. Mercer County is the latest county to report a case.

Most cases involve unvaccinated people, according to the Ohio Department of Health. Confirmed patients have ranged from 15 months to 20 years old.
