Article Icon 1University of Toledo Names 19th President

James Paul Holloway was introduced Thursday as the University of Toledo’s 19th president following a months-long national search. Watch the introductory press conference here.

Holloway, who will assume the role on July 15, previously served as provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of New Mexico and spent nearly 30 years at the University of Michigan.

He succeeds Dr. Gregory Postel, who joined the University of Cincinnati as senior vice president for health affairs and dean of the College of Medicine.

Matt Schroeder has served as interim president since Postel’s departure and will return to his role as chief financial officer.

Article Icon 1Highway Patrol Steps Up Memorial Day Enforcement

The Ohio State Highway Patrol will increase its high-visibility enforcement over Memorial Day weekend, targeting impaired drivers and seat belt violators from midnight tonight through 11:59 p.m. Monday. 

Last year, 26 people died on Ohio roads over the holiday, including 18 in crashes involving impaired drivers. Troopers made 361 arrests during the same period.

AAA projects nearly 1.7 million Ohioans will travel at least 50 miles from home this weekend, with a record 1.54 million expected to travel by car.

HomeToGo reports that vacationers nationwide will travel an average of 750 miles, with Put-In-Bay and Port Clinton ranked among the nation’s top 10 trending Memorial Day destinations.

Communities across Ohio will host Memorial Day parades and ceremonies this weekend, including a keynote address in Columbus by former U.S. Army Green Beret and NFL player Nate Boyer. More central Ohio events are listed here.

The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War will present their annual commemoration service at Spring Grove Cemetery. Meanwhile, many Greater Cincinnati communities will host their own commemorations and parades

In northeast Ohio, the Canton Memorial Day Flea Market and several parades are among the region’s featured events.

Toledo’s ceremony, scheduled for Saturday at the All Wars Memorial, will include a keynote address from Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Christopher J. Dziubek and performances by the Springfield High School JROTC and band.
