Yost Drops Bid for Governor

State Attorney General Dave Yost suspended his campaign for governor after losing the Ohio Republican Party’s endorsement to Vivek Ramaswamy.

With Yost’s withdrawal, Ramaswamy emerges as the frontrunner for the 2026 Republican primary, with entrepreneur Heather Hill his sole remaining challenger.

“I do not wish to divide my political party or my state with a quixotic battle over the small differences between my vision and that of my opponent. I am simply not that important,” Yost said.

Yost has served as attorney general since 2018. His current term ends in January 2027.

Trucker Guilty in Fatal Bus Crash

A Licking County judge found Jacob McDonald, a 61-year-old truck driver from Zanesville, guilty of six counts of vehicular homicide for a 2023 bus crash that killed six people, including three Tuscarawas Valley High School students.

McDonald was acquitted of aggravated vehicular homicide and vehicular assault, with the judge finding insufficient evidence to prove he recklessly or knowingly caused harm. McDonald faces up to 18 months in jail.

Prosecutors argued McDonald was distracted by his cellphone when he failed to brake for slow traffic, but the judge ruled that data from McDonald’s cellphone was inconclusive.

“While the court found that this was not a blameless tragedy, it stopped short of delivering the full measure of accountability her family believes is warranted,” a spokesman for one of the victims said.

Florida Leads in Residents Moving to Ohio

Florida topped all states in people moving to Ohio in 2022, with 16,831 relocating from the Sunshine State, according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau data.

Kentucky ranked No. 2 with 13,836, followed by Michigan with 12,753. Kentucky and West Virginia were the only states where Ohio ranked as the primary relocation choice.

A 2024 Ohio movers study by United Van Lines found nearly 41% of inbound residents moved to the state for family reasons, followed by job opportunities (32%) and retirement (8%).
