Article Icon 1Ohioans Assisting Hurricane Victims

Ohio organizations are sending help south after Hurricane Isaias slammed into the Gulf Coast as the first hurricane of the Atlantic season.

Matthew 25 Ministries is deploying a disaster response team to the Florida Panhandle with cleaning items, baby supplies, and tools, while Columbus Humane took in six dogs evacuated from Mobile, Alabama, ahead of the storm.

Cincinnati’s Hoxworth Blood Center is calling for blood donations: “In the event that our neighbors to the south do need blood, we want to be able to help them,” Ashley Smith said.

Isaias came ashore near Destin, Florida, Friday night as a Category 2 storm, killing at least four people in Florida and Alabama and knocking out power to more than 1 million at its peak.

Cleveland ranked as the seventh most dangerous place to live in the nation in U.S. News & World Report‘s 2026-27 rankings of places with the highest crime risk.

Dayton also landed on the list at No. 17, while Memphis, Tennessee; Oakland, California; St. Louis, Missouri; and Detroit, Michigan, took the top four spots.

The rankings, based on murder and property crime rates per 100,000 residents from FBI crime reports, are drawn from the publication’s annual Best Places to Live list.

On that list, Cleveland finished last among 16 Ohio cities, while Mentor placed No. 1.

All Hallows’ Eve, Ohio Village’s 19th century-style Halloween celebration, returns this month after a two-year hiatus during renovations to the Columbus living history museum.

The event runs Saturdays, Oct. 17 and 24, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., featuring a bonfire retelling of Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and a ghostly appearance by the Headless Horseman.

Guests can also have their fortunes told, play games, make crafts, try dancing, paint pumpkins, and learn about 19th-century funeral practices.

Construction at the site will continue through early 2027, but the village is opening exclusively for All Hallows’ Eve and Holidays at Ohio Village on Dec. 11 and 12. You can find more information on the Ohio History Connection’s website.
