On this day in 1920, Cleveland Indians shortstop Ray Chapman was struck in the head by a pitch by New York’s Carl Mays. Chapman died from his injuries the next morning.

FAA Pushes Back on Burke Closure

The Federal Aviation Administration and U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, are pushing back on efforts to close Burke Lakefront Airport, complicating Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb’s plan to redevelop the 450-acre lakefront site.

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said closing Burke would be “very counterproductive” for aviation safety and economic growth. Moreno said he now sees no scenario in which the airport closes.

Bibb wants Burke closed by the end of 2029. City-backed redevelopment concepts include parks, a golf course, youth sports facilities, restaurants, a marina, trails, and RV camping.

DeWine Says Tax Cuts Are Enough

Gov. Mike DeWine is urging his successor to stop cutting Ohio’s income tax, saying the issue rarely arises when businesses discuss locating or expanding in the state.

DeWine has signed four consecutive state budgets that reduced individual income taxes. Under the most recent budget, the state dropped to a 2.75% flat tax. Previously, earners making more than $100,000 a year paid a 3.5% income tax.

Breaking with DeWine, Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy wants to eliminate the income tax, beginning with taxes on capital gains. His Democrat opponent, Dr. Amy Acton, has criticized Ramaswamy’s proposal.

Conneaut Brings D-Day to Life

Tens of thousands of visitors gathered at Conneaut Township Park over the weekend for the largest World War II reenactment in North America, with about 1,000 reenactors recreating the Allied invasion of Normandy along Lake Erie’s shoreline.

The 27th annual gathering transformed the park with period uniforms, military vehicles, battle reenactments, and hands-on experiences.

Among the guests was 102-year-old Army veteran Jack Einstein, who was drafted in 1944 and called the event an important educational experience.
