Pope Francis died Monday at age 88, sparking tributes from around Ohio and the world. He was the first pope from the Americas and led the Catholic Church for more than a decade.

Gov. Mike DeWine praised Francis’ “genuine love of, and devotion to, all people,” including the poor and unborn. Sen. Bernie Moreno said that Francis’ legacy would “continue to inspire others as he inspired Catholics all over the world.”

Vice President JD Vance met with Francis on Easter Sunday. During their brief meeting, Francis presented Vance and his family with rosaries and chocolate eggs.

In response to Francis’ death, President Trump ordered U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff.

Catholic leaders throughout Ohio mourned the death of Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff of the Catholic Church.

Cincinnati Archbishop Robert Casey remembered Francis as a “good and faithful servant to God,” while Archbishop Emeritus Dennis Schnurr praised the pope’s advocacy for the persecuted and unborn.

Bishop Edward Lohse of Steubenville reflected on Francis’ 2015 apostolic visit to the U.S. Cleveland Bishop Edward Malesic recalled his audience with the pope in January during a pilgrimage to Italy.

The Diocese of Columbus held a Requiem Mass for Pope Francis at St. Joseph Cathedral on Monday, while the dioceses of Youngstown and Toledo announced plans to celebrate Masses in his memory.
