Mahoning County Declares State of Emergency 

Mahoning County Commissioners declared a state of emergency Monday morning after a tornado-warned storm tore through the county Sunday, leaving widespread damage, flooding, and power outages.

Two separate thunderstorm cells merged into a single dangerous storm as they moved through Youngstown, Boardman, Canfield, Poland, and Struthers Sunday afternoon, prompting back-to-back tornado warnings.

The storm’s aftermath closed Southern Park Mall and the Boardman branch library and knocked out power to thousands of FirstEnergy customers. Utility crews initially expected power back by 11 p.m. Sunday, but FirstEnergy later said full restoration could take several days and is moving in additional crews.

State Sen. Al Cutrona and state Rep. Tex Fischer have asked Gov. Mike DeWine to issue his own state of emergency declaration to unlock additional resources for the Mahoning Valley.

Officer Killed in Wayne County Shooting

A Rittman police sergeant was shot and killed responding to a report of gunfire late Sunday, in a night of violence that left four people dead.

Four Medina County sheriff’s deputies were also shot; two were hospitalized in stable condition and two were treated at the scene. A sheriff’s K-9 was shot and is in serious condition.

The Wayne County coroner said the shooting began when a man killed a woman and her teenage daughter before turning his gun on arriving officers. The suspect then died by suicide.

Officials called Sgt. Scott Ries’ death “an unimaginable loss” for the department and the community, which is now leaning on neighboring agencies for support as the investigation continues.

Train Derailment Prompts Evacuations 

A Norfolk Southern train derailed in Bucyrus late Sunday night, sending residents near the tracks out of their homes over fears a tanker car carrying hydrochloric acid could leak. Nineteen cars came off the rails near Whetstone Street and Auto Avenue around 8:45 p.m., with five overturning.

Crawford County officials initially asked everyone within a mile of the wreck to leave. Bucyrus High School opened as a shelter, and roughly 40 evacuees sought refuge there with help from the American Red Cross.

By early Monday, officials said no tanker was actively leaking, and the evacuation zone had been scaled back to a quarter-mile radius. Whetstone Street is expected to stay shut through today while crews clear the derailed cars.

The incident inevitably draws comparisons to the 2023 East Palestine derailment, though officials stress the situations differ; no chemicals have been released in Bucyrus so far. The cause remains under investigation.
