Tornado, Macroburst Confirmed 

Gov. Mike DeWine declared a state of emergency for Mahoning County Monday night after the National Weather Service confirmed an EF-1 tornado and a destructive macroburst tore through the area Sunday.

The tornado touched down in Austintown and traveled about half a mile to Canfield with peak winds of 95 mph, shredding treetops onto homes. A separate macroburst pushed 90 mph winds across a more than 10-mile stretch of the county, and nearly a thousand trees came down.

DeWine toured the damage in person before signing the declaration, which opens the door to state and federal cleanup funding. “The damage here is very, very extensive,” DeWine said.

The move followed Mahoning County commissioners’ own emergency declaration.

Ohio’s Summer Electric Bills Could Top $800

Ohio households could see summer electric bills top $800 this year, a 17% jump over last summer’s $682 average, according to a new report from the think tank Third Way.

The projection draws on pricing data from Heatmap News and MIT, showing Ohioans’ costs already running ahead of last year’s pace, driven largely by record energy demand from data centers and manufacturing.

Other estimates put the increase closer to 7.5%, but analysts broadly agree bills are climbing faster than the region is adding new generation capacity.

One in six American households is already behind on utility payments, according to the National Energy Assistance Directors Association, and Ohio utilities disconnected service more than 173,000 times between June 2024 and May 2025.

125M Overhaul Planned for Athletic Center

Ohio State plans to spend $125 million renovating the Woody Hayes Athletic Center in Columbus, the football team’s practice facility since 1987, athletic director Ross Bjork announced.

Bjork said the project targets the building’s north side, expanding the locker room, training room, and team meeting spaces that currently can’t fit the full roster at once.

Fundraising is underway, but Bjork said the university still needs more public visibility and financing before construction, tentatively eyed for around 2028, can begin.

“There’ll be some short-term pain along the way in logistics, but frankly for me, it’s just time to go,” Bjork said.
