One person was arrested as nearly 200 protesters gathered outside the Butler County Jail in Hamilton on Sunday night, demanding the release of a 19-year-old man detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The person who was arrested, a 26-year-old woman, faces charges of assault, obstructing official business, resisting arrest, failure to disclose information, and disorderly conduct.

“While the majority of attendees demonstrated peacefully, several individuals unlawfully entered the roadway, obstructing traffic and creating a safety hazard,” the Butler County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.

Article Icon 1 Court Asked to Pick Mayor

Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley asked a court to determine who is the rightful interim mayor of East Cleveland, accusing the city council president of trying to claim the seat despite a judge’s appointment of an interim mayor.

East Cleveland City Council President Lateek Shabazz declared himself mayor after former Mayor Brandon King was convicted of theft in office. However, a judge appointed Sandra Morgan interim mayor until a November election.

East Cleveland’s city charter says that the council president becomes mayor if the office is vacated, while Ohio law allows judges to appoint a mayor during a suspension.

Akron resident Debbie Miller was honored by the city’s mayor for collecting one million pieces of trash over two years to help clean up the community.

Miller began her cleanup effort in February 2023 after her dog cut its nose on broken glass. She collected items such as glass, syringes, knives, and even a handgun. Her millionth item was a water bottle. Read her blog here.

Mayor Shammas Malik praised Miller’s dedication to keeping Akron clean and safe.

Miller plans to keep picking up trash but is scaling back from her past three-hour daily routine to focus on other interests.
