Article Icon 1AG: Fairs Can’t Set Own Gun Limits

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost issued a formal opinion stating that county fair boards cannot enforce firearm bans that go beyond state or federal law.

The opinion comes after a 2024 incident at the Champaign County Fair, where St. Paris Police Chief Eric Smith was arrested for refusing to disarm while off duty.

Although the fair board defended its no-firearms policy, gun rights advocates argued the ban was illegal because fair boards are public entities subject to state law.

State law still allows firearms to be prohibited inside enclosed fair buildings, a provision not affected by the attorney general’s opinion. The full opinion can be read here.
